Hi friends! I’m doing something a little different today and letting a new friend step in to provide a guest blog post. Y’all know I’m all about prep and today Jessica is upping the game and taking us to the runway for inspiration.
Here’s a little bit about Jessica… she’s a freelance writer who covers a variety of topics, including fashion, beauty and lifestyle. When she’s not writing, she’s probably watching HGTV (aren’t we all?!) with her cat Georgie.
Hope you enjoy! Let me know what you think and what styles you’re craving for Fall 2016.
Fall is a season of new beginnings—yes, even (or perhaps especially) when it comes to fashion. The cooler days certainly call for a style boost, with jackets, jewel tones, and cozy fabrics supplementing the classic pieces of the season. For easy, weather-appropriate ensembles, update your wardrobe with these preppy fall trends.
Fuchsia Hues
As far as we’re concerned, the color pink will always be in style. And if fall’s offerings are any indication, the fashion world agrees (for this season, at least). As Who What Wear writes, the richly vibrant fuchsia stood out on countless runways this past Fall/Winter 2016 fashion month with a laundry list of big names—Altuzarra, Derek Lam, and Chanel, among others—showing the shade in every shape and material from sequined dresses to velvet pantsuits. Rock the saturated hue in head-to-toe style or opt for a statement piece that makes your outfit pop.
The Modern Loafer
Comfortable, versatile, and effortlessly chic, flats are a classic staple that virtually every girl has in her wardrobe. After all, as Lyst notes, flat shoes have arguably become the new must-have shoe, giving us more than enough reason to keep adding to our ever-growing collection. And with so many iterations—from the ballet flat to the slipper slide—it can be an impossible task to choose your favorite. This season, however, it’s all about the menswear-inspired loafer. It’s been updated to reflect a more modern and feminine style via metallic finishes, eye-catching embellishment, and pretty adornments. To channel a class president vibe, wear your loafers with ribbed or cashmere socks for a luxe, preppy finish.
Plaid Mini Skirt Suits
It’s an undeniable truth that fashion is currently obsessed with all things ’90s, from slip dresses to choker necklaces and now, plaid mini-skirt sets. There’s no as ifs or buts about it—the mini-skirt suit popularized by Cher and Dionne in Clueless is back in a big way. For the fall season, designers such as Tory Burch and Michael Kors offered up a 2016 take on the look in color-contrasting tweed. Wear the trend with a simple tee for a more casual look or channel your inner ’90s “it” girl and pair with a v-neck sweater and mary janes.
The Varsity Jacket
Drawing inspiration from high school, this season’s take on the varsity jacket combines a preppy silhouette with a vintage vibe through contrasting colors and luxe materials such as tweed and wool. More suggests styling the school boy-themed bomber jacket with more feminine pieces, such as a dress or flared skirt and classic pumps to give your look balance. Or pair it with your favorite jeans, secretary blouse, neutral flats, and a structured handbag for a sleek, polished ensemble that’s perfect for the office.
Pink and Yellow
Fuchsia may be bringing a bold splash of color to fall’s lineup, but there’s even more pink to be had this season in the more subtle shade of rose quartz. However, instead of pairing the pastel with more pastels (an expected match that’s more spring than fall), designers have given the sweet shade a refreshingly offbeat attitude with one of the brightest colors on the spectrum: yellow, in every shade under the sun. Take inspiration from designers like Ulla Johnson and Marissa Webb by pairing soft, dusty pink overalls with a yellow turtleneck or layering a sheer rosy dress over a marigold yellow slip.
