Happy December! I am so excited to bring you guys a guest post from my friend Adrienne today. She was one of the first gals I met when we moved back to Charleston in 2016. She’s also the most real with health advice that I can actually get behind. Her Instagram and her blog is chock full of great motivation and health and exercise tips.
I’ll let her intro herself a little more below, but for now, know that I really felt like I needed to hear from a profesh (y’all she has a PhD!) friend on how to stay healthy with all the travel coming up for the holidays. So Adrienne and I decided to swap blogs. I’ll be sharing how to maintain your mental health and still be active on social while you travel on her blog, go check it out. Let me know if you guys enjoy these, I’d love to bring in more friends and bloggers!
Take it away Adrienne…
Hey y’all! This is Adrienne, Professor of Exercise Science, and owner of adrienneherrenbruck.com where I work with people one-on-one to reach their fitness and wellness goals without all the pain and restriction that usually comes with dieting.
This time of year, even if you’re not an avid traveler, you’re likely on the road more often than usual. The Holidays are by far one of the most stressful times for my clients, not because of all the festivities, but because of the worry that comes with the thought of losing progress, gaining weight, or not feeling their best.
That’s where I step in! Over the years with much trial and error with myself and clients, plus hours and hours of research, I’ve come up with The Top Three Things To Stay Healthy While Traveling.
Drink All The Water
If I know you, you’re already rolling your eyes and scrolling down because this is such a simple suggestion. But guess what? You’re also probably not meeting your recommended amount of hydration each day.
A simple way to calculate your hydration needs is to take your body weight in pounds, divide it in half, and drink that number of ounces every day. So, for example, a 140lb woman, would strive for 70oz of water each day! Want to make this happen? Find a water bottle you love and keep it with you always!
Drinking water is always important, but especially in times where we may have greater stress, indulge more in delicious food, or don’t get enough sleep.
Move Every Day
Yes, I’m the crazy person walking around at the airport or doing squats while my husband fuels up the car. I’m not saying you need to workout every day. Heck, over Thanksgiving I didn’t work out at all! But, I also wasn’t completely sedentary. I got in movement and standing in when I could.
Moving is good for our stress levels, helps with digestion, and keeps us feeling energized. Plan a way to get in extra movement on your trip. Maybe take a hike with your family, or join a friend at a local studio while your in town. There are always ways to get off the couch and have fun if you look for them.
Another favorite thing to do: at home/hotel workouts. It’s so simple to get in a quick 20 minutes and I promise you’ll feel better after! (Bonus, your pj’s can double as workout clothes!)
Add a Fruit or Veggie With Each Snack
Go ahead and indulge in whatever you want! But, when it comes to snacks I try to get in a fruit or veggie each time. This could mean a simple plate of peanut butter and a banana, grabbing a fruit bar (like, That’s It), or having some raw veggies with hummus.
This may sound funny, but when we travel we tend to eat veggie-like things (broccoli cheddar soup, fruit cobbler) and not actual veggies or fruit. This is especially true over the holidays, so making sure we’re getting in all the micronutrients is a great way to treat our bodies with respect and feel better once we get back home!
At the end of the day, the point of travel is to experience and enjoy. So before anything, make sure these two are happening! I believe that when we treat our bodies well, we feel better and more energized to enjoy all the things happening on our trips! It’s about finding the gray area where you care, but are not restrictive. Somewhere in that balance is a beautiful place where we can enjoy #allthethings and feel great too.

Happy Healthy Travels!
Thank you Adrienne – make sure to go follow her you guys, isn’t she great?! I’m feeling more confident going into all the travel this holiday season, hope you guys are too. I think the biggest one for me above is the move every day. Compared to all the walking we do here in London, I feel so sedentary driving everywhere and sitting around catching up with friends. Maybe I’ll turn some coffee dates into beach walks!
As always, feel free to send me any questions or feedback in the comments below or email or DM me! Thanks again Adrienne!
